BESS investors often seek a balance between maximizing revenue and maintaining battery longevity. This raises the question: what is the optimal number of daily cycles? Our view is that the first step is determining the number of cycles per day that would yield maximum revenue.

📊 In this post, we analyze DA optimization with IDC fine-tuning using data from November 2024.

How did we calculate it?

Our model calculated the number of daily cycles needed to achieve the highest possible revenue. We examined 2 MW and 4 MW batteries (both 4 MWh) across different RTE efficiencies. The results are presented in the chart as the average daily cycle count for the month.

🔎 Key takeaways:

✅ There is no single optimal cycle count for all battery configurations. ✅ A higher battery power with the same capacity allows for more daily cycles. However, this only applies if the battery is small enough to act as a price taker. ✅ A higher RTE efficiency enables more daily cycles, which can lead to increased revenue.

Further questions?

Would you like to explore the optimal number of cycles for other months? Or are you interested in aligning operational strategies with manufacturer warranty limits? Perhaps you're considering how to structure an optimization contract to balance revenue potential and technical constraints?
