In our last post we showed that the Balancing Market reform has created favourable conditions for flexible sources such as energy storage (BESS).

But will such a situation last forever?

Let's take a closer look at the revenues of our model battery (2 MW, 4 MWh, RTE 0.86) from July to December 2024. The monthly analysis shows that the revenue line has been gradually decreasing from month to month. The exception was November - specifically days 6 and 7 November - when the Dunkelflaute phenomenon caused our battery to record some of the three highest daily revenues in 2024.

Is the observed trend a bad sign for investors in BESS? Not necessarily.

In this analysis, it is worth considering the volatility of production from PV, which plays a key role in market dynamics. Perhaps this spring, when production from PV is on the rise, is when our model battery will reach new daily revenue records. There is still time to come to a definitive conclusion, but one thing is certain - the market remains full of challenges and opportunities. Time will tell how the flexibility of BESS will fit into the changing needs of the system.

Feel free to discuss - what are your predictions for the BESS market in 2025?
